2021 Culture Pass Book Display Winners

This October & November, 135 branches across the Brooklyn Public Library, New York Public Library, and Queens Public Library systems competed in the first-ever citywide book display contest, creating colorful and dynamic displays around the theme of Arts & Culture to help re-introduce New Yorkers to Culture Pass.

More than 4,300 patrons cast votes for their favorite branches, and the 12 favorites from each system were then sent to a jury of artists, authors, and cultural leaders, who convened virtually on Friday, November 19th to select a winner and runner-up from each system. One grand prize citywide winner was then selected from the three systemwide winners.

Below are the winners and finalists from all three library systems. Congratulations to all who competed!

Hillcrest - With Culture Pass, NYC's public libraries are just the start of an epic adventure! Everyone can get a free library card and access institutions that highlight our shared culture. Our display, like NYC, has many different elements: books include suggestions for Culture Pass institutions to visit, 'Libflix' highlights digital resources (and the value of your library card!) using embedded QR codes, and our interactive window display game shows how the subway reaches most Culture Pass institutions making them accessible to so many New Yorkers. Whatever page you're up to, let the library be part of the next chapter!

Williamsburgh Library - By day and by night, the Williamsburg Bridge stretches its long arms across the East River, connecting where we have been to where we are going, and leading back home again. For our display, the Williamsburgh Branch team wrapped our front entrance in paper to depict our local bridge. On it you see saxophonist Sonny Rollins, who found new creative inspiration after he turned to practicing on the Williamsburg Bridge in 1959. We then created cityscapes at each end of the bridge, daytime and nighttime, using collage and other media to capture the variety and vibrancy of living in NYC.

St. Agnes Library - We created an interactive 15 by 3.5 foot display with colorful silhouette representations of the experiences people would share while visiting some of the Culture Pass partner institutions. Using hand drawn stencils and cardstock paper we pulled inspiration from exhibits at the New York Botanical Garden, the American Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Moving Image, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. We invite library patrons to interact with the display by guessing which cultural institutions are featured to win a small prize. Books were selected to inspire patrons to explore further and contextualize their visits.

Tompkins Square Library - Our location in the East Village means that we are surrounded by rich arts culture and history. Our display takes inspiration from the downtown nightlife creative scene, made famous by clubs like the Pyramid Club, right across Tompkins Square Park, which held early drag shows for famous names, including RuPaul. Fresh Meadows - At Fresh Meadows we focused on the idea that NYC offers quality cultural experiences all year round, not just during busy seasons. The flowing river allowed us to thematically connect several endcaps, our only display space in a physically small but busy branch. Life-sustaining water springs from a Culture Pass booklet, runs past a tree of knowledge, and wends its way through the seasons towards the meadows. Regular people create art alongside the professionals of displayed materials. A scavenger hunt featuring Queens-based institutions interactively highlights ways customers can use different parts of our collection to enhance their Culture Pass experience.

Seaside - Important and timeless. That's how Seaside Library and its community view arts and culture. In our Culture Pass Book Display we encourage everyone to sit down, relax and enjoy the arts and culture books we offer and also engage them to be part of the book display by expressing their thoughts or answering ready-made questions about arts and culture. After writing on multicolor papers in the shape of butterflies, Seaside Library visitors post these butterflies to the letters 'A' & 'C' structures and also around the Culture Pass Book Display area.

Whitestone - At Whitestone branch the Culture Pass Display centers on the interests of a vibrant community dedicated to reading, arts, and striving. The center painting was done by one of the librarians during 2020 Covid pandemic. The same librarian had initiated a drawing program at the branch (in 2019) that attracted adults from the local community and from some other boroughs (Brooklyn). Since the Culture Pass program started in 2018 our patrons showed great enthusiasm in using it and exploring the vibrant New York City.

Woodhaven - We, at the Woodhaven Library, decided to depict the cultural life of our corner of New York and encourage people to reach out to explore the rest of New York City. Although a small, residential neighborhood, we have a rich culture as we all gather at our public library and our vibrant Forest Park. We gather at the George Seuffort Bandshell for all kinds of events and music. And informally, every day, the neighborhood brings their own cultures to the park through music and dance.
